German language skills are an important prerequisite for good integration and for schooling or vocational training. Good language skills increase the chances of securing a qualified, well-paying job. They also facilitate participation in other areas of life.

Recognized Language Schools of the Foreigners and Pass Office

The country of Liechtenstein supports, under certain conditions, attendance at German courses that aim for independent, basic language use.

Liechtenstein Languages (LieLa)

Liechtenstein Languages offers various language courses.

• LieLa BASIS: Here, German is learned in 4 intensive weeks. In these courses, people can learn German, even if they have no educational background and have failed in conventional courses.

• LieLa ALPHA: only works together with

  LieLa BASIS. This program is for people who have never learned to read or write or use other scripts. With this program, people learn to read German in 4 weeks.

• LieLa PLUS: Extension of LieLa BASIS, which facilitates access to the job market.

Early German Promotion

All children should have good German language skills before starting school. The linguistic early support is assigned to the school office, and concepts requested by local schools (for example, 'Mach-Mit-Nachmittage', parent-child German courses) are approved by the school office.

Educational offerings are highly recommended for children with no or little German language skills. However, they are not mandatory. Children and their parents can participate in the year before entering kindergarten.

Coordination and Advisory Office for Early Support

The 'Early Support' assists the learning and development processes of infants from birth to kindergarten or school entry and promotes motor, linguistic, emotional, social, and cognitive abilities. The goal is to create a child-friendly and stimulating environment that is conducive to healthy development. The primary location of 'Early Support' is the family. Families should be supported as well as possible through family-supportive and family-complementary offers and measures.

Other Offers for Early Support

The offer is complemented by other institutions such as playgroups, daycare centers, or parent education courses. The various offers, activities, and contact points in the area of Early Support can be found on the family portal.

German as a Second Language (DaZ)

The offer is for students with a non-German native language. The DaZ lessons help children and young people improve their language skills. The DaZ lessons are free and take place 1 to 4 times a week, in groups of 3 to 6 students. The maximum duration of support is 7 years.

The DaZ teachers support children and young people in their integration in Liechtenstein.

Intensive Course German as a Second Language (IK DaZ)

The intensive course German as a Second Language (IK DaZ) helps children integrate faster into school life. Children and young people from different countries learn in mixed-age groups. Mixed-age means that children and young people, regardless of their age, learn together.

In this one-year course, students learn German and are also taught in other subjects. Additionally, they learn a lot about the culture, the country, and the people in Liechtenstein.

Younger children are immediately integrated into kindergarten or into the 1st grade of their place of residence.

Here you can use and borrow a range of media (books,

films, newspapers, and much more) in various national languages. Media for children, adolescents, and adults are available.
